How to get to the Galapagos Islands

Since the Galapagos Islands are 600 miles off the Ecuador mainland the only practical way to get there is flying. By boat takes 3 days and is not readily available. The planes flying this route are modern jet aircraft and there are a limited number of flights per day on 3 different airlines.

Galapagos flight informationConsiderations for flying to Galapagos

Before getting deep into research about Galapagos flights, consider first what you will do there as this will determine how to proceed with booking your flights. If your focus is on maximum wildlife viewing, you will want to be on a live aboard yacht to the uninhabited islands. Or maybe you want to visit mostly inhabited islands for a cultural, town & beach, land based day-trip experience. Either way, you need your main Galapagos reservations confirmed before buying airfare so that times and dates will line up.

Flights to Galapagos Islands

  • Flights depart from either Quito or Guayaquil, Ecuador
  • The main airports are on the islands of Baltra & San Cristobal
  • Each yacht in Galapagos has a specific flight associated with it
  • Spaces on Galapagos flights are limited because yacht departure dates have first priority for contracted seats
  • Flight tickets purchased in association with a Galapagos cruise are the most guaranteed
  • Tickets purchased direct from airlines are the first ones to get bumped around/cancelled/changed, times often change
  • Cost of Galapagos flights is subject to change up until the flight dates are completed, sounds weird but it's the reality
  • Airport codes are: Quito: UIO, Guayaquil: GYE, Baltra: GPS, San Cristobal: SCY
  • Many Galapagos flights originate in Quito and make a stop in Guayaquil on the way
  • There are some direct flights from Quito to Galapagos and Galapagos to Quito, this can change at the last minute

Baggage allowances on flights to Galapagos

  • You are typically allowed 44 pounds per traveler for your checked bag and 17 pounds per traveler for your carry on
    (varies slightly depending on airline)
  • Your checked bag will be hand searched prior to being checked (with you present) for certain foods and organisms which may be harmful to the fragile Galapagos ecosystem
  • Your carry-on bag will be hand searched upon arrival to Galapagos for the same reasons (with you present)

Galapagos flight distances and times

  • Quito to Guayaquil: ~162 miles/260.7 Kilometers = ~30 minutes flight
  • Guayaquil to Galapagos: ~687 miles/1105.8 Kilometers = ~1 hour and 45 minutes flight
  • You can take an inter island flight between some of inhabited islands once you are there but getting a guaranteed advance reservation can be tricky through Emetebe. The views on this flight on a small plane are fantastic. This is best booked once you are there for travelers doing extended Galapagos stays.
